I decided to do the 365 project this year by taking a photo a day. I'm not being super artistic with it, in fact, thus far all my photos have been taken with my iPhone 4 camera so many of them are very grainy. But nonetheless, I decided I would try to document my year through photos and short blurbs about each day. I'm surprised I only ended up with one shoe shot, and 3 self-cam shots this month. I wasn't going to share the photos with everyone but decided, hey, why not. I went to London (Ontario) for a mini vacation this past week with my cousins and on Saturday night we had a little dinner party. Visit Stephanie Mackenzie's new blog to see the pictures that I took of our delicious food. We also had a great lunch meeting at the cutest little cafe called The Bag Lady Variety and started planning an art show together. Holy Hungry Artists 2013. Stay tuned for more on that.
"Wrapped and done by December One" That is my new motto for my Christmas shopping. I'm nearly there; with all but one gift left to buy and only a couple left to wrap, I will be ready to relax come December. I wanted to have super simple tags for my gifts and though all the printable ones I found were super cute, the designs took too much ink. So my solution was to make my own! So as a special Christmas gift, from me to you, I'm sharing these tags with you to label your own gifts! Just print, cut, and stick them on your presents! Easy as pie.
You can print them on plain white paper or mix it up and print it on kraft paper like I did (of course), or add a little colour by printing on coloured printer paper or construction paper. Whatever suits your presents best! I used double sided tape on the back but you could always just tape the sides down. I probably should have changed up the theme for my Christmas presents from last year but I ended up sticking with what I like, almost the exact same as last year: kraft paper, red wrapping paper, and yarn, but this time with the addition of paper doilies on a few of the presents. I was going to do newspaper but as you can see from my blog, it's hard for me to not use kraft paper for pretty well everything. I'm also once again counting on none of the people I got for secret santa exchanges visit my blog otherwise... oops. And since I was so ahead of the game, we don't even have our Christmas tree yet. So until then, my gifts will be safely tucked away... ...under the piano.
And if you're not super ahead of the game (like me), be sure to check out the Etsy shop "A Child of Whimsy" for great homemade gifts. Mrs. S. Frances just added tons of new, beautiful jewelry pieces, accessories, Christmas cards, and decorations. She also gives free gift wrapping with every purchase and currently has a coupon for 20% off all orders. Check out her facebook page to get the coupon code. Happy shopping and gift wrapping everyone! Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride" It's been almost two months since I've posted, mostly because October was a crazy month for me seeing as I was working on several different costumes. Unfortunately I didn't get the best photos of any of them... because sometimes you're just too busy to even do that. This halloween it rained to my two cousins and I went out trick-or-treating in our Nightmare Before Christmas costumes from last year, and then changed into the ones I made for this year afterwards for a small get together. It took over a month of work and probably a little too much money to put these three costumes together. They were all handmade by myself from materials and clothes mostly bought at thrift stores. We also entered a costume contest at the Burlington Toy Convention and took home first prize for our group costume! Here are a few more photos of us at the convention: Below is a photo set from actual Halloween night. We didn't do our make up full out because it would have taken far too long. The makeup from the photos above took over 4 hours to complete for the three of us. And these are just bonus pictures from the Toy Con last year where my sister wore my costume for Jessie the Cowgirl from Toy Story. She won second place! And on the right is me wearing it in 2010. Photos taken from my own camera, Wild Bunny Hair Studios, and the Burlington Toy Con Flickr.
Also check out my sister's company "Closet Geeks" For all your anime, gaming, and japanese needs! And also a special shout out to my dear cousins, Jasmine and Ally, for putting up with me when I get into crazy halloween costume mode. I couldn't do it without them :) In September my mom and I had the honour of doing the floral arrangements for K & J's wedding. I love the little wire wrapped curls at the ends of the groomsmen's boutonnière.
When ever we do floral for a wedding we marathon that old show 'The Nanny' and the theme song and her accent ends up stuck in my head for days after. And on a random side note, please vote for my 'Nightmare Before Christmas' costume from last year in the Value Village costume contest. Winning that gift card will help justify the amount of money I spent making out costumes for halloween this year. Stay tuned for that post with pictures coming up soon. This post is short and sweet:
I've updated my online portfolio with some of my latest projects that have been posted here on my blog, as well as with some that are yet to be seen here. So take a looksy by clicking the Portfolio tab above or www.kaylaisamachine.weebly.com/portfolio NBC's Community is starting up again on October 19th and I decided to whip up a quick invitation to invite a few folks over to watch the season premiere together but as usual, I took a joke seriously and made a poster for it. So here is a version of it for all to enjoy and commemorate this joyous occasion! Community: 'First Chang Dynasty' (S.3, Ep.21) Pretty tacky, I know, but in case you aren't a fan of the show and don't recognize the reference, I just mimicked the poster Chang had for his birthday bash. Duh-Doi! Plans are for another foos-ball tournament like my last Community party as well as the noted Dance Off, Sundae Bar, and Photo Booth With Props. We'll see about the dance off seeing as... I can't dance. And maybe the photo booth too. With the premiere being so close to halloween I don't know if I'll have time to pull one together because all work I need to put into making the costumes for my trio this year... it will make last year's costumes look like child's play. But watching in a blanket for is a guarantee though, and costumes aren't required, but definitely encouraged. In case you didn't see my last Community Party post (complete with free printables) click here! And here's thefor the season premiere poster above in case you want to throw your own party:
Random things like this is the reason it takes me so long to finish with the string of other projects I have. So excuse me, but I must get back to ripping the seams out of this old dress for Halloween. #sixseasonsandamovie
This past weekend was my cousin's wedding so I spent the days leading up to it assisting my mother with the floral arrangements (and subsequently taking photos of them all). I also designed the invitations, programs, table menus, and all other stationary used for the wedding which I will make a post about at a later date. But for now, take a look at the florals; I loved the muted colour palette! My mom's website is called 'Betty Blooms' and if you check it out, I also assisted with the 3 weddings currently posted. She makes arrangements for weddings, graduations, and more in the GTA so if you're in need of a florist, check out her contact page!
Sorry I haven't posted very often lately, things have just been crazy busy. Anyways, as many of you are well aware, sometime when I think something is funny or it just catches my interest, I can't help but make it happen (a few of you might remember the LotR/CTO mash-up poster). Thus forth, this poster was made: A few weeks ago at work some co-workers and I were making jokes about employees keeping their language clean while they are at work (i.e., not swearing). I made a comment that we aren't sailors so we have to watch our language and it developed into the tagline of "You're a seller, not a sailor, so please watch your language". Then we joked about making a poster with a picture of a pin-up sailor on it with that written on it and hanging in the back room at work... so of course, I actually did it.
It's been a while since I've drawn something by hand, but I couldn't help but add colours, text, and some more textures in digitally. My patience for hand-rendering has weened, but I didn't realize how much I missed it until I drew this up. Just for a random bonus, here's a picture of the original sketch: The love of throwing parties must be a family trait because I love to host dinner parties, movie nights, tea parties, or any other done up soirée that I can. Last summer we had our first Girl's House Church Backyard movie night and I've been anxiously awaiting when we could have another. We set up a projector in the backyard, did a potluck of snacks, and watched Audrey Hepburn in 'Funny Face'. Here are some photos from last summer: We had a cute set up in my backyard but I couldn't help but take it to the next level by designing and printing up some signs to help set the mood. I went with a red and white striped theme to give it a retro feel (and because it matched my popcorn containers I scored at the dollar store a few years back).
